Description

  • Set Configuration: Focus on a common plate-only set (e.g., 245 lbs).
  • Plate Type: Cast Iron, 2″ Olympic.
  • Key Features: Durable cast iron construction, grip handles on larger plates for easy handling, price.
  • HGM take: Cast iron plates are the old school, macho look to lifting weights, and CAP’s are the no-frills entry point for getting heavy weight on the bar at the lowest possible cost. Historically (ie. pre-pandemic) CAP plates had a reputation for weight inaccuracy, ie) up to 10% off their stated weight, so there’s a reason they’re positioned as cheap cast iron plates.  But, as of 2025, we’re seeing signs that CAP has been successfully addressing this problem, with much more acceptable weight tolerances.  If you’re just trying to put weight on the bar at the lowest possible cost, these are the winners – and a HUGE bonus if you’re getting the Titan loadable handle for dumbbell training.

Weight plates are by far the easiest category to screw up and blow your budget.  Check out our Weight Plate guide to avoid the common pitfalls.
